About Sherborne in Bloom Team
Sherborne in Bloom
Following the Town Council’s decision that it did not want to be involved in the organisation of Sherborne in Bloom in future, a few of us got together to investigate whether we could run the project on a voluntary basis. The Town Council offered to continue to support the project on the condition that we set up a properly constituted organisation with its own bank account and management.
Louise Burks of Castle Gardens, Gillian Gunner, Caroline Rowland and Sally Westlotorn have all been involved in the project for over seven years and we have, between us, accumulated a great deal of experience in running both the internal and external competitions. We were soon joined by Dru Gurzynski, a former mayor of Sherborne, who happily accepted our invitation to join in.
We unilaterally formed ourselves into a working group that we designated ‘Sherborne in Bloom Team’ with each of us having defined roles and responsibilities based on our previous experience. We agreed that we would seek support from organisations and residents of the town, whom we would designate as ‘Friends’ of the project. Friends could volunteer to help with gardening, admin, fundraising and, indeed, financial donations. As the project progressed, we would co-opt Friends into the working group to fulfil appropriate roles, as and when required.
Prominent people who have asked to be ‘Friends’ include Rt Hon Oliver Letwin MP and Canon Eric Woods and his wife.
This website is honoured to have twice won the coveted Barry Cruse Trophy for 'Best Website' in the South West in Bloom regional competition.
We were awarded the trophy in 2010 and 2013.
